# Should I Get an MBA?

Before you worry about rankings, GMATs, or coffee chats, pause and ask the bigger question: **does an MBA actually make sense for *****you***** right now?**

#### 1. What do you want to do after your MBA?

An MBA is a tool, not a destination.

Ask:

* What job do I want immediately after graduation?
* Does that role *actually* recruit from MBA programs?
* Do I need an MBA for that role, or just experience?

Examples where an MBA often helps:

* Consulting
* Investment banking / finance
* Product management
* Strategy / corporate leadership programs
* Entrepreneurship (with structure + network)

If you can’t clearly articulate your post-MBA target, take time to network and learn about potential career paths that would you be interested in post-MBA.

#### 2. Is now the right time?

Timing matters as much as motivation.

Consider:

* How much work experience do I have?
* Am I still figuring out what I want to do?
* Am I trying to escape my current job… or move *toward* something?

MBA is often most useful when:

* You’ve hit a ceiling in your current career path
* You want to pivot industries or functions
* You have enough experience to contribute in class (and recruit well)

Red flag reasons:

* “I don’t know what else to do”
* “Everyone else is getting one”
* “I just got out of the military and feel lost”

#### 3. What problem am I trying to solve?

Think in terms of **return on investment**.

An MBA can help you:

* Change industries
* Increase compensation
* Build a professional network
* Learn business fundamentals
* Gain credibility in corporate spaces

But it won’t:

* Magically give you purpose
* Guarantee a job
* Fix burnout
* Replace real work experience

Good framing:

> “I want an MBA because it helps me transition from X to Y.”

Not:

> “I want an MBA because I don’t know what I want.”

#### 4. Opportunity cost (money + time)

Even with GI Bill or Yellow Ribbon, there are tradeoffs:

* 2 years not earning a full salary
* Relocation costs
* Recruiting stress

Ask:

* What would I be doing instead?
* Can I reach my goals without an MBA?
* Would I gain experience that makes me *more* competitive later?
